Deep Nostalgia

Deep Nostalgia is a software feature within the MyHeritage platform that utilizes deep learning to animate faces in static photographs. The technology applies pre-recorded driver videos of facial movements to a still image, generating a short video that simulates the subject looking around, blinking, and smiling. This video reenactment process functions on user-uploaded photos and is integrated with MyHeritage's broader genealogical services, which include family tree construction, DNA analysis, and access to historical records. The core photo animation feature is available at no cost and produces a high-quality, realistic video file from the source image. The primary users are genealogists, family historians, and individuals conducting personal ancestry research. A typical workflow involves a user uploading a historical family photograph to the platform to create an animated video of the subject. This animated file can then be shared with relatives or embedded within a digital family tree to offer a more lifelike depiction of an ancestor. A secondary use case involves educators or museum curators who animate public domain photographs of historical figures for inclusion in presentations or digital exhibits, aiming to increase audience engagement with the material.
